DESCRIPTION:An expert panel\n\nDocumentary films
are profoundly important to any m
 odern\, liberal\, democratic society
. Films can be informative\, entert
 aining\, educational\, insightful\, c
ritical\, expressive and more all a
t once. They are significant econo
 mically\, artistically\, socially\, p
 olitically and culturally.\n\nYet do
 cumentary filmmakers in Canada and
  around the world increasingly fac
e obstacles to creating their art.
  Copyright law\, policy and practic
e can be one such obstacle\, though
  paradoxically copyright protectio
n can also be critically important
to filmmakers. The concept of fai
r dealing or fair use of copyright
 -protected works represents a way
out of this paradox. If properly i
mplemented in practice\, the fair d
 ealing doctrine can facilitate acc
ess to the raw materials creators
need to make documentary films whi
 le fulfilling their own reasonable
  requirements for copyright protec
 tion.\n\nOn February 18\, 2009 the To
 rys Technology Law Speakers Series
  presents a panel of international
 ly-renowned experts from Canada an
d the United States\, discussing th
e practical impact of copyright cu
lture on documentary films\, and th
e creation of best copyright pract
ices for fair dealing in the docum
entary film community. Join the co
 nversation from 11:30 - 13:00 in r
oom 147B of the University of Otta
 wa's Faculty of Law.\n\nPanelists wi
ll be Peter Jaszi and Sean Flynn f
rom Washington College of Law\, Tin
a Hahn from the Documentary Organi
zation of Canada\, and David Fewer
and Jeremy de Beer from the Univer
sity of Ottawa.\n\n[image by Scott B
